Adam Catterall blasts Everton fans with Rafa Benitez arrival imminent
TalkSPORT host Adam Catterall is completely baffled by Everton fans who do not want Rafa Benitez as their next manager.
It has been widely reported that the 61-year-old is on the verge of being appointed as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at Goodison Park despite being somewhat of a legend at Merseyside rivals Liverpool [BBC Sport].
However, even though Benitez’s CV is one of the best in European football, the appointment is being met with widespread anger from Evertonians.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Catterall has hit out at Blues fans for their reaction to Benitez’s reportedly imminent arrival.
As shown on talkSPORT’s Twitter account, Catterall said: “I’d guess from what I’ve read that 80 per cent of Everton fans – maybe more – are against Rafa Benitez becoming their new manager.
“I’m thinking to myself, ‘what do you want, what do Everton fans want for their football club right now?’. I want you to ring the station now and tell me what you want for your football club.
“I’ll have a guess because as a football fan, I would think that you would want to win trophies, I would think you want to be successful, I would think you would want to get rid of this barren spell from 1995, lads and girls. They ain’t won anything since 1995.
“People keep telling me that Everton are the sleeping giant of English football – how long are you sleeping for? Have you been taking sleeping pills? You’ve been out since the 1990s.
“You need to start the momentum of winning stuff so what do you do? You bring in a manager that knows how to win things, that’s been at the very, very top level in order to then inspire guys in the playing staff to go and win things.
“Just because Rafa Benitez has managed the guys across from Stanley Park, has been successful there and has been classed as a bit of a legend, you’re throwing your toys out of the pram because he’s ‘one of them’.
“If he comes to you and wins the League Cup, the FA Cup or god forbid gets you to Europe and go on to win the Europa League. Is that not what the point of this appointment is?”
He has a point
We’re surprised by how anti-Benitez the majority of our fanbase has been.
While we totally understand why there’d be some frustration over trying to hire the former Liverpool manager, we struggle to see how people cannot get over something that happened a very long time ago.
As Catterall says, this is Benitez we’re talking about.
It’s not like it’s someone who used to manage Liverpool that wasn’t successful.
This is a Champions League winner, a Europa League winner, a league title winner, a cup winner – a natural-born winner.
Why did we hire Ancelotti? Because he’s proven in his career that he can be successful.
Why are we going to hire Benitez? For the same reason.
Farhad Moshiri is going to get a lot of stick and that’s expected.
But some of our fans need to realise that if we want to be successful then some unpopular decisions are going to have to be made.
