Phil McNulty: Benitez banner will only galvanise fans to support Spaniard
A banner that reads ‘We know where you live. Don’t sign’ has been posted near Rafa Benitez’s residence as he’s closing in on the Everton job.
While there’s no clarity as to who made it, BBC Sport’s Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty has stated that this will only unite Everton fans in support of Benitez if he does become the manager.
Via his personal Twitter account he wrote, “And, in a reflection of their intelligence, has actually galvanised more support from Everton fans behind Rafa Benitez and his appointment than he has ever had.
Abhorring to say the least
We’re not pointing fingers at Everton fans, but let’s just assume that it was one of us that did it, this is absolutely disgusting and unforgivable behaviour.
One may not like a certain decision taken by the higher-ups at the club, but that’s part and parcel of the game. No fan has ever agreed with every single decision taken by the club they support, but they find a way to live with it.
Making your voice heard is one thing, but to put out banners of a threatening nature another. To target Benitez and his family for the simple reason that they don’t want him to take up the Everton job is ridiculous.

At the end of the day, he has his own free will and so do the owners as to what they think is best for the club. If after having discussions with so many managers they’ve decided Benitez is best suited for the job, then their decision must be respected.
We’re certain that most Everton and Liverpool fans will condemn such behaviour and will in turn applaud Benitez when they’re in the stands for a live game next.
There should be a serious investigation into the incident and the necessary action must be taken against the preparators.
