Confirmed: Everton appoint Rafa Benitez as new manager

Rafa Benitez has been confirmed as the new manager of Everton Football Club, according to the Daily Mail journalist Dominic King.

Writing on his personal Twitter profile, King claims everything has been agreed and signed, though the club have not announced the news themselves.

He said: “No announcement from Everton but the contracts have been sorted and Rafa Benitez is now the manager. He’s signed a three-year deal.”

The day has arrived

Our search for a new manager has been a very drawn-out affair, spread over nearly a month since Carlo Ancelotti left us for Real Madrid on June 1.

We were linked to countless of different names, some exciting, some utterly bland and boring.

But, at the beginning of the process, we didn’t think we’d really end up making the most divisive appointment in the club’s history – Rafa Benitez.

The former Liverpool boss started to emerge as a serious candidate in recent weeks, and then he became the frontrunner, something that has caused huge issues among the fanbase, with many taking it to the extreme to voice their displeasure with banners outside houses and Goodison Park.

The question is – what happens now? Do those dissenting voices, the ones who really made themselves known to the masses, turn around and now accept the club’s decision, and support the side?

There have been some supporters who have said that they could never back the team with Benitez in charge – will that really happen?

It’s all up for opinion, but Benitez is certainly not a welcome figure among many supporters, and we will really see the strength of feeling when he takes charge of his first pre-season friendly at Goodison.
