Everton opted against appointing Nuno Espirito Santo because of his negative football
Rafa Benitez is set to be announced as Everton new manager but Nuno Espirito Santo came very close to landing the job.
Daily Mail journalist Dominic King reported on his personal Twitter account on June 11 that the former Wolves boss was close to being appointed as the Toffees new manager, with a written contract offer expected to arrive in the next 48 hours at the time.
However, talks fell through, and The Telegraph has revealed that the Everton board decided against going ahead with the Portuguese appointment as his style of football was regarded as too negative.
Is Benitez positive?
Everton fans were against Sam Allardyce’s style of football, and Santo’s style would have been met with groans too at Goodison Park.
Wolves often soaked up the pressure and hit opponents on the counter under their boss, but it produced back-to-back seventh-place finishes in the Premier League nonetheless.
Admittedly, we want to enjoy our football and also get the needed results, but Benitez is not exactly the man for that.
The Spaniard delivered the goods at Valencia, Liverpool, Napoli and Chelsea, but did not do so playing entertaining football.
Real Madrid were quick to do away with him due to his pragmatic and often boring style of play, and Everton fans are not about to be in for a treat.
He will likely deliver the results as we look to break into the top-six, and while we expect him to be a little more adventurous given the quality of players at his disposal, we would not be surprised if the same old Benitez turns up.
