Greg O’Keeffe details Dominic Calvert-Lewin reaction after Everton star’s England omission

Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin was “disappointed” to be left out of England’s squad to face Germany on Tuesday night, according to The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe.

The Everton correspondent made the claim on his personal Twitter profile, following up on the original article written by himself and David Ornstein on The Athletic website, which reported the news that Gareth Southgate had omitted the 24-year-old from his 23-man matchday squad for their Euro 2020 round of 16 clash.

O’Keeffe wrote: “Dominic Calvert-Lewin left out of Gareth Southgate’s England’s squad for England v Germany this afternoon. Believe he’s ‘disappointed’ & others close to him totally baffled by it as there is no backup to [Harry] Kane.”

No wonder

Who can blame the Sheffield-born star after his sensational season for the Blues?

He has every right to be miffed and, probably, fuming.

Disappointed seems to be an understatement, and no doubt there is a stronger undercurrent of emotions inside of him.

But as a consummate professional he will almost certainly have taken it on the chin and accepted Southgate’s decision, and wished his teammates luck.

Calvert-Lewin can be more neutral about the decision, but England and Everton fans don’t.

Everton

Many Blues fans won’t care for the England result at all, but we still have close ties to our star striker and want the best for him.

This snub from Southgate will have hurt him but at least he has the chance to make his mark on the tournament in the quarter-final after England beat Germany 2-0 at Wembley on Tuesday night.

That’s the sort of stage that his talent deserves, and his performances over the last 18 months have merited.

We haven’t been able to support his rapid rise with our own side struggling to match him, and he was clearly one of our leading lights last season with 16 Premier League goals, with Richarlison closest to his tally with a measly seven.

Let’s hope Southgate wakes up and picks Calvert-Lewin on Saturday.
