Peter Reid urges Everton fans to get behind the club after Rafa Benitez appointment
Peter Reid has sent a strong message of support after Rafa Benitez was appointed as Everton manager on Wednesday afternoon.
The moment many supporters feared finally came on Wednesday after the ex-Liverpool boss was unveiled at Finch Farm as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor.
There have been mixed messages following the Spaniard’s confirmation, with many still perplexed by the club’s decision.

However, writing on his personal Twitter profile, Everton legend Reid urged everyone to get behind the club.
He said: “Everton, the club is bigger than anybody. We must get behind the new manager and support our team. If a small club come to Goodison Park to defend, we must respect that also.”
Time to unite
The appointment of Benitez has been viewed as an extremely divisive one, given his prior allegiances and historical comments towards the Blues.
However, there is no going back on Farhad Moshiri’s decision now – Benitez is here to stay, at least for the coming months anyway.
He may fail to inspire a turnaround at the club after our dismal end to the 2020/21 campaign under Carlo Ancelotti.
A poor start would almost certainly see the pressure crank up to insurmountable levels which would force the Blues board to react – can you imagine being near the relegation zone after 10 games, and how fans would react? It would be carnage.
But, until he can prove himself, we must support the team now. No true Blues fan wants the club to lose games, so therefore we must suck it up and will the team on, irrespective of any disdain we might feel about the appointment.
If he succeeds, then great – we’ll be fighting near the top and for major honours.
If he doesn’t, well, Blues won’t have to put up with him for long.
