Everton manager Rafa Benitez wants Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet signed
Everton manager Rafa Benitez wants the club to sign Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, according to Fichajes.
The Spanish website reports that the Toffees boss wants to strengthen at the back as he “does not trust Yerry Mina” after the Colombian failed to convince him during the Copa America.
Barcelona are looking to sell players and are ready to let go of Lenglet for around £17.15million, and Benitez wants Everton to pounce.
Not good enough
Mina has struggled for consistency since joining us from Barcelona, but Lenglet is not an upgrade either.
The Frenchman has been error-prone since joining the Catalans, failing to convince at the European Championship too.
The 26-year-old was given the rare opportunity to shine against Switzerland in the last-16, but lasted just 45 minutes after a woeful display.
It would not be particularly surprising if Barca are indeed keen on selling him, but Everton is not a dumping ground for Camp Nou flops.
Benitez could be mistaken if he reckons he can bring out the best in Lenglet, and we strongly believe this is a signing he should steer clear of.
Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey have the potential and talents to become England international stars, and the new Everton boss should be looking to mould them into top players.
Mina is not entirely bad, either, and he has what it takes to become a world-beater if he cuts out the mistakes in his game.
Benitez is known for improving players, and that is one of the reasons why we have brought in him.
We expect him to help develop our defenders, not replace them with players in need of development themselves.
