Everton tabled an opening bid for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly on Wednesday evening, according to Calciomercato.

The Toffees have been in the hunt of the Senegal international since Carlo Ancelotti’s time as manager, and have now substantiated their interest with an official bid for the 30-year-old.

Koulibaly would undoubtedly be an upgrade on the current crop of Everton defenders and would add much-needed solidity at the back for the Merseyside club.

Having read the news, a number of Everton fans rushed to Facebook to display their excitement and offer their comments on the player.

Most Evertonians deem him a good fit for the club and want Marcel Brands to get him over the line this summer.

Here’s what they said:

Agreed

Koulibaly may not be as good as he was a couple of years ago, but he’s still a quality defender that can walk into our playing eleven. Should we sign him, he would be among the best defenders in the Premier League without a shadow of a doubt.

He would bring with him his leadership, tackling and ball-playing skills that have made him such a well-rounded defender in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Having previously worked with Benitez, he knows what the Spaniard is about and the way he sets up his team. So, it won’t take too long for the Senegalese to get used to life in the English top flight.

Whether or not Napoli accept our offer is another thing, but it’s good to see us taking this pursuit seriously and we could end up with one of the best centre-backs in Europe at the end of the window.
