Demarai Gray to undergo Everton medical at Finch Farm today

Everton are set to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Demarai Gray with the winger set to undergo a medical at Finch Farm today (Tuesday), according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claims Gray, 25, is on the verge of completing a £1.5million return to the Premier League, just six months after quitting Leicester to join Leverkusen in Germany.

It is understood that ex-Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend has already undergone a medical with the Blues ahead of joining on a free transfer while goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is close to joining from Bournemouth.

Reinforcements

Is this the start of what could be a massive transfer window for Everton?

Gray, Townsend and Begovic are not big signings but they are signings who, once made, suggest Rafa Benitez and Marcel Brands are going to be moving players on.

Let’s face it, none of them can really be viewed as regular starters, except for maybe Townsend, who’s shown in his career that he can shine in the Premier League and that he can perform for Benitez.

Gray joined Bayer Leverkusen in January and despite a promising start in which he scored on his debut and supplied assists in his second and third Bundesliga matches, his form ultimately petered out.

We wouldn’t expect someone who struggled to start for Leicester and struggled to start for Leverkusen to be a main man at Goodison Park.

However, we do need depth in the wide areas of the squad and there could now be a chance for Benitez and Brands to move on a couple of players like Berard and Alex Iwobi, who’ve struggled to impress on Merseyside.

Once these signings are done, we’d expect to see some outgoings but fans also want to see additions made to Benitez’s newly-inherited starting line-up.

Let’s hope they don’t want too late into the summer for that.
