Kevin Campbell: Asmir Begovic would be a shrewd signing for Everton
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell is confident that Asmir Begovic will be a great addition to the Everton goalkeeping department following his arrival.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina international joined the Toffees for free from Bournemouth and is currently with the rest of the squad on the pre-season tour of the U.S.A.
Begovic, 34, is replacing Robin Olsen who spent last season on loan at Goodison Park as cover to Jordan Pickford.
Campbell believes the former Chelsea goalie would come good and keep the England international on his toes.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said: “Begovic is an experienced goalkeeper, very good number 2 and he won’t let anybody down if he comes in, so I think that would be a shrewd signing.”
Quality addition
Carlo Ancelotti used Olsen ahead of Pickford on a number of occasions in the Premier League last term, with the Sweden international making seven appearances.
While we do not see Benitez likely repeating the trick with Begovic after the Toffees ace’s performances for the Three Lions at the European Championships, the Spaniard can be rest assured that he has a quality cover in the veteran should Pickford become unavailable for whatever reason.
With over 200 English top-flight appearances under his belt, the goalkeeper brings much-needed quality and experience to our squad.
We see him giving the first-choice a run for the money, and that competition will definitely make both of them better.
Pickford can learn one or two things from a goalie who has been in the game for 16 years, and the youngsters in the dressing room and academy can also gain from his wealth of experience as they look to make it in the game.
In other Everton news, Benitez reveals 30y/o Toffees man wants to play for England again after major development.
