Everton withdraw from race for PSV right-back Denzel Dumfries

Everton have withdrawn from the race for PSV right-back Denzel Dumfries after he told his agent he wants Inter Milan instead, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Netherlands international caught the eyes of the Toffees at the European Championship, with recruiting in the position a priority to them.

Inter have always been their fierce rivals for Dumfries’ signature, and he has now made it known to super-agent Mino Raiola that he wants to move to the San Siro.

Huge blow?

Everton really need a new right-back despite Seamus Coleman penning a new two-year deal recently.

The 32-year-old featured in 25 Premier League games last term, registering three assists, and while he is expected to play a huge role under manager Rafa Benitez, we could do with the addition of a long-term successor.

Jonjoe Kenny is clearly not the one and director of football Marcel Brands would likely be disappointed if a transfer for Dumfries does not work out.

The PSV star was one of the best players at the Euros, and having him on the right of the defence and Lucas Digne on the left would be perfect for Benitez’s style of play.

The Spaniard wants his wingers and full-backs to always supply quality crosses into the box for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and that is one of Dumfries’ best qualities.

Unfortunately, it appears our inability to qualify for Europe has worked against us.

Inter are the Serie A champions, and it is normal for a player looking to move to the next level of his career to choose such a side ahead of Everton.

From the look of things, we have to look elsewhere to bring in a right-back as we clearly need depth in the position, and Brands will be hoping to land a quality player perfect for the task.
