Everton star James Rodriguez could play against Southampton

Everton star James Rodriguez could be set to feature for the Toffees against Southampton, despite being axed from Rafael Benitez’s plans, according to the Liverpool Echo.

They claim that if the “attacking trio” of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Moise Kean, and Richarlison remain unavailable, the Colombian might be handed a start against the Saints.

Therefore, despite Benitez reportedly informing the 30-year-old that he isn’t part of his plans, he might have to play Rodriguez next Saturday.

A lifeline for Rodriguez?

If Kean, Clavert-Lewin, and Richarlison can’t play against the Saints, then the Toffees have very limited options, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see Rodriguez play.

Now, if he were to play, you could argue this could be a lifeline to save his Everton career, which seems to be coming towards an end.

The Colombian and Benitez do not get on, and he has been told he is free to find another club, but if he inspires the Toffees to a win, could that change [the Mirror]?

Well, you would imagine the pressure from the stands would ramp up, and Benitez could be forced into a difficult decision.

However, for that to even potentially be a thing, the 30-year-old needs to make a big impression against Southampton; if he doesn’t, then you would think his Everton career was as good as over.

So, it could be a big week for Rodriguez, and we hope if, given the opportunity, he takes it.
