Lazio want to sign Joaquin Correa as quick as possible amid Everton interest

Lazio want to sell striker Joaquin Correa as quickly as possible amid interest from Everton, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The newspaper claimed on Sunday [print edition, August 8, page 75] that as it stands, Aston Villa are in pole position to sign the 26-year-old Argentina international, who’s also wanted by the Toffees and Leicester City.

It is understood that Correa would cost around £30million and “sources at the Serie A club say they want a deal done quickly”.

Do we need him?

If you’re signing a striker for £30million, you would expect that he would go straight into your starting line-up.

However, it’s hard to see how Correa can get into Rafa Benitez’s starting line-up on a regular basis with the Spaniard likely to be using Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison over anyone else up front.

Of course, Richarlison has only just finished his international exploits with Brazil this summer by winning a gold medal with them at the Olympics on Saturday.

While it could be several weeks before he’s in action for the Blues, we don’t think that signing a striker for £30million is a good idea to cover someone for a matter of a few matches.

Correa had a half-decent season for Lazio last time out.

He scored 11 goals and supplied six assists in 38 appearances across all competitions last term, with one of those goals coming against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

He also grabbed a brace against AC Milan and made the net ripple against Juventus and Atalanta in Serie A so he knows how to score against top teams.

Correa is versatile and can play as a striker, on the wing or in support of a striker and South American football expert Tim Vickery told talkSPORT earlier this month [August 4, 3.30pm] he’s “quick and he’s talented” but best played in a “support-striker role”.

There’s just something about this one that suggests to us it won’t happen and if it did, we wouldn’t be too excited by it.

In other Everton news, the Blues are eyeing a deal to sign this South American ace who wants to quit his cash-strapped club.
