Everton in talks to sign Switzerland midfielder Denis Zakaria

Everton are in talks to sign 24-year-old Switzerland midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to Christian Falk.

The German journalist claims the Borussia Monchengladbach dynamo is the subject of intense interest from a trio of Premier League clubs.

On Tuesday afternoon German news outlet BILD claimed Everton, Arsenal and Tottenham wanted to sign Zakaria, and that he was available in a cut-price £16.9million deal.

Now on Wednesday morning Falk, who works for BILD, has reported that negotiations are more advanced for the 34-cap international.

Falk wrote on his personal Twitter profile: “True – Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton are in talks for a transfer of Denis Zakaria. Competitors from Italy are Roma and Napoli.”

Bargain

It looks like the pace is picking up as clubs circle for the central midfielder powerhouse who club and international teammate Yann Sommer says has qualities comparable to football icons Zinedine Zidane and Michel Platini [Bundesliga website].

There are more pressing areas of concern for Everton to target in the transfer market this summer – a new right-back, winger and attacker are pretty crucial if we have any designs on securing a European spot in the upcoming campaign – but we would also be happy to see the midfield area upgraded.

Abdoulaye Doucoure is probably the only midfielder who has impressed fans in recent times, with Allan looking a bit leggy since returning from injury.

The other options behind that duo are lacking in quality, and we would welcome Zakaria into the Blues engine room to add some energy and bite.

It looks like we will face a tough fight to sign him with some big clubs also in the mix, but it’s encouraging to hear that we are at least in the running.

In other Everton news, the Blues want to sign this 2020/21 European title winner who was at Real Madrid under Rafa Benitez.
