Everton wanted PSV right-back Dumfries on loan, Inter deal reached
Everton have missed out on PSV right-back Denzel Dumfries, with the Netherlands international now set to join Serie A champions Inter Milan.
According to Voetbal International, the Toffees and Inter both wanted him on loan initially, but the Eredivisie outfit only wanted a permanent deal and refused to cooperate.
The Italians have parted with £12.75million (€15million) for the signature of Dumfries, and he is due to have his medical on Friday ahead of the move.
Big miss?
Inter have bagged an absolute bargain for themselves, and Everton probably have only themselves to blame for missing out on him.
£12.8million for a quality right-back is as cheap as they come, but we have to admit that the status of the Italian champions also played a huge role.
However, offering more cash instead of attempting to land Dumfries on loan could have handed us an advantage if we played our cards right.
Toffees director of football Marcel Brands knows the right-back from his days in the Dutch top-flight, but that was not enough in the end.
Last season’s failure to qualify for Europe is still haunting us, and we are not likely to make any marquee signings this summer.
If we are unable to part with such a fee to get a top signing over the line, then landing quality players capable of improving Rafa Benitez’s squad could be difficult.
The funds are not likely to be the problem given the financial might of owner Farhad Moshiri, and it appears balancing the books and adhering to Financial Fair Play is proving to be an impossible task.
