Jamie Carragher mocks Everton midfielder Allan after Tony Bellew’s Liverpool suggestion

Jamie Carragher has mocked Everton midfielder Allan after Tony Bellew suggested he would start in the current Liverpool team.

The Sky Sports pundit and former boxer were speaking on LADbibleTV’s YoutTube channel, where they were asked a series of questions on the Merseyside duo.

Bellew, a life-long Blues supporter, claimed that 30-year-old Brazilian Allan is good enough to start in Jurgen Klopp’s team, a suggestion ex-Reds defender Carragher took exception to.

“No chance, no chance,” Carragher said.

Bellew added: “He’s got legs all over the park.”

Carragher replied: “Allan? He can’t run! [His nickname at Napoli was ‘wheels’] Wheels! Flat tyre it should be. He’s not better than Fabinho. Fabinho is the best in the league in that position.”

Hard to argue with Carragher

Bias aside, Allan’s certainly not shown that he is better than Fabinho.

Had this question been asked in the early part of Allan’s Goodison Park career, then we would be able to be much firmer in our opinion that he would get into Liverpool’s starting XI.

But he has failed to recapture the form he was showing prior to his injury sustained against Leicester City in December 2019, and he has looked lethargic since returning from his lengthy lay-off in the winter period.

It’s hard to argue that he is showing the sort of ability that would place him above the likes of Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson at the moment.

Is he on a similar level to those when fully fit? He possibly isn’t far off the England international, discounting any traits like leadership, but with the former Serie A star now on the wrong side of 30, time is ticking away for him to rediscover his best form for the Blues.

Hopefully, not being picked for Brazil in their Copa America squad over the summer will mean he is fresh and re-energised for the Everton engine room this season.

He will be crucial alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure, with the options behind the duo of a much lower standard.
