Darren Bent reacts as Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend make Everton debut
Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend made their official debuts for Everton in the Premier League against Southampton today.
The attacking duo put in impressive shifts for the Toffees in the 3-1 victory over the Saints at Goodison Park.
Townsend got the assist that sparked the comeback before coming off, while Gray also did well in the attacking third.
Darren Bent was blown away by the hardworking shift the former Leicester City put in, saying after the game on Sky Sports News: “Demarai Gray was okay, but Andros Townsend was the pick for me out of the two because you know what are you going to get every time.
“And he got the ball into the box with real quality and I think Calvert-Lewin will really thrive with that kind of service because there is a little bit of James Rodriguez about it.
“Demarai Gray worked really really hard and I think he would get better.
“For Rafa Benitez, I think he’d really be happy. Not a really good start but the way they finished the game was really really strong.”
Top performances
Everton fans were not too excited with the additions of the duo for obvious reasons.
Townsend arrived as a free agent after Crystal Palace decided against extending his deal, while Gray left for the Bundesliga in January after struggling to impress at Leicester City.
It is only normal for most people not to be sure about what those two can bring to the team.
We are trying to get into the top-six and are expected to make more marquee signings.
However, Financial Fair Play has made that impossible so far and manager Rafa Benitez needed to be smart with recruitment by bringing in two attackers that did not cost much.
Gray did not have a hand in goal today, but he is only going to get better under a manager like the Spaniard.
The Premier League winner has loads of potential in him, and should he manage to start fulfilling it and get to impress on a consistent basis, the decision to sign him could up being a masterstroke.
