James Rodriguez: Atletico Madrid post was a total coincidence

James Rodriguez has played down reports that he will be leaving Everton to join La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

The Colombian, who has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park this summer, posted a selfie with a phrase popularised by Atletico supporters.

WinSportsTV journalist Pipe Sierra, who is followed by Alan Myers and Paul Joyce, went on to say, via his personal Twitter account that Diego Simeone’s men were looking to sign the 30-year-old.

However, James quickly took to Twitch to throw cold water on any reports linking him with a move to the Spanish capital.

As translated by Marca, he said, “I didn’t know that this was the motto of this team, it was a total coincidence. I only put a personal message, I did not say that I am going to a club or for something.

“Yes (when) I go to a club, I do not say it or give signals, I speak it when it is already a fact because in football anything can happen.”

Destined to leave

James continues to play around and joke about his future on social media platforms like Twitch and we’re not reading anything about him having fruitful conversations with Rafa Benitez over staying at the club beyond this summer.

With only a year left on his deal at the club, it makes sense for the club to cash in now, especially given how he does not appear to be seeing eye to eye with the new manager.

Everton

Carlo Ancelotti was clearly the reason he decided to join, and him leaving has seen James seem to lose interest in representing the club.

We don’t know for sure whether or not Atletico are keen, but they will be able to pay a big transfer fee for the Colombian – which is something we must capitalise on and hope that others join the race as well.

The next few days will be a good indication as to what the future holds for the Colombian.
