Benitez used Huddersfield game to put Jonjoe Kenny in the shop window
Rafa Benitez used the Huddersfield Town game to put Everton right-back Jonjoe Kenny in the shop window ahead of the transfer deadline, according to The Athletic.
The 24-year-old Englishman played the whole 90 minutes in the 2-1 win over the Championship side in the second round of the League Cup on Tuesday.
Kenny is currently not in Benitez’s plans for the season, but it remains to be seen whether Everton will be able to get a club that wants him before the summer window shuts next Tuesday.
The end?
The Toffees academy graduate spent the latter half of last season on loan at Celtic after struggling under Carlo Ancelotti, and it does not seem his fortunes have changed under Benitez.
The Spaniard should have used the League Cup clash to blood the academy players crying out for first-team playing minutes, but he had to feature a fringe player like Kenny, hoping that it would send a message to prospective suitors that he still has something to offer.
Everton have been linked with Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson, and that sends a clear message to Kenny.
Seamus Coleman remains first-choice right-back at Goodison Park for now, and Benitez would love to bring in the Scotland international as cover, competition and as an eventual replacement for the 32-year-old.
It remains to be seen whether Everton go back in for Patterson after having an initial £5million bid knocked back.
In light of this, Kenny needs to leave if he wants to play football this season, and hopefully, interests will develop in him in the coming days.
In other Everton news, Joorabchian has told the Toffees to sign a replacement for player after recent development.
