James Rodriguez wage demands could scupper Everton exit to Porto
The wages demands of Everton playmaker James Rodriguez could see an exchange deal for Porto star Luis Diaz hit the skids, according to TSF.
There have been widespread reports today [Friday, 27/08/21] that Rodriguez, 30, may return to his former side with Diaz, 24, heading in the opposite direction.
However, Portuguese news outlet TSF “learned in the last hours” that while the Colombian attacker is keen on making the move, his salary demands are one of the main obstacles that may scupper a deal, though Porto are still pushing for his arrival before the conclusion of deadline day on August 31.

Everton to pay a proportion of his wages?
Rodriguez’s exact wages at Everton have not been divulged, but it’s fair to assume that he is the club’s top earner and on a considerable sum of money.
Everton can afford that as a result of the influx of money that the Premier League rakes in via broadcasting rights, making it the most lucrative league in the world.
Events are slightly different in Portugal, where there is not as much clamour for watching games worldwide.
As such, generally, they cannot afford superstars in their heyday that are determined to make big money.

Rodriguez was earning high wages at Real Madrid for six years before arriving at Everton last summer, and it’s unlikely he is willing to accept a huge decrease after only just turning 30.
Therefore, it might be incumbent on the Blues to pay a proportion of his contract for the 2021/22 campaign before his deal expires next summer and he departs on a free transfer.
Rafa Benitez would still be offloading a player for which he has no uses, and getting a decent amount of money off the wage bill.
It’s not ideal, but if Rodriguez’s compatriot can be brought in during the process, then it may be a smart move in the long run.
In other Everton news, the Blues are confident of signing this record-breaking striker amid an approach to his Saudi-owned club.
