Everton edge closer to announcing Salomon Rondon arrival on deadline day
Everton are “edging closer” to officially signing former West Brom and Newcastle striker Salomon Rondon, according to The Bobble.
The reliable Everton insider, who was retweeted by Times journalist Paul Joyce on Monday due to the accuracy of his updates from Goodison, reports that talks are progressing for Rafa Benitez to sign the 31-year-old Venezuala international.
However, it is understood that the Blues are waiting on Rondon to agree a financial package with his former club Dalian Professional in China.
Dalian face major financial issues at the moment and it has already been reported that Rondon’s deal there could be terminated.
Good enough?
Let’s face it, signing an ageing striker as a free agent who isn’t know for scoring many goals isn’t the most thrilling of signings.
However, Benitez knows Rondon, got him playing great football at Newcastle in 2018/19 and the South American can provide much-needed back-up for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
With Moise Kean now gone, Benitez’s options up front are pretty thin so signing Rondon adds a new layer of depth.
Despite his less-than-impressive goalscoring record in the Premier League, Rondon is good at holding the ball up, he can cause issues for defenders with his strength and he’s rather good in the air.
He’s quite similar to Calvert-Lewin although everyone can appreciate he’s nowhere near as good as the England striker.
But there are going to be games when DCL cannot play for one reason or another or there will be matches in which the Everton striker cannot find his shooting boots to save his life.
And that’s why we’ll have Rondon there.
For a late signing to add depth, Rondon will be more than good enough.
