Matt Jones: Seamus Coleman excellent v Portugal
Seamus Coleman’s performance on international duty for the Republic of Ireland vs Portugal impressed Everton-crazy Matt Jones.
The Ireland international played as a wing-back ahead of a back three and was a constant thorn in the Portuguese side from the right flank.
He ended up losing 2-1, but it was down to two headed goals by Cristiano Ronaldo, for which he could not be faulted.
After the game, Jones, who is a journalist for World Soccer Talk and also host of The Blue Room EFC – which is the most listened to Everton podcast, took to Twitter to share his thoughts.
He wrote” “Coleman excellent for Ireland tonight it should be said.”
Impressive but needs an understudy
Coleman is 32 and is still the first choice for both club and country. Given the demanding nature of modern full-backs, he’s one of the hardest-working players on the field, which does take a toll on a player’s physical well-being in the longer run.
Everton completely missed the trick by not signing a backup or even a replacement for Coleman this summer.

There were links with Denzel Dumfries, but he ended up joining Inter Milan, leaving the Toffees thin in that department.
It remains to be seen whether or not Coleman can be a regular for club and country and still not suffer any serious injury issues.
He does have an injury history so it’s better that he takes it easy or the club could be without his services for a number of weeks.
