Genk right-back Daniel Munoz was offered to Everton in the summer
The agent of Genk right-back Daniel Munoz has revealed that the player was offered to Everton during the summer transfer window.
The Toffees’ need to strengthen in that department before the window shut was no secret, and Diego Carannante offered the 25-year-old Colombian international to the club and the likes of Fiorentina.
However, Everton made no move, while the £13million the Belgian outfit were demanding made the Serie A side consider a loan move instead.
“Daniel Munoz’s negotiation with Fiorentina was born out of my collaboration with Sasha Baranov and Niche Guerrero,” his agent Carannante told Fiorentina.it.
“We were offering the player to Rafa Benitez’s Everton, but then we also talked about it with Fiorentina.
“Fiorentina liked the player but didn’t have the budget to buy him because there was a difference of €5million between the €15million that Genk were asking for and the eight million-plus of Fiorentina.
“In January, we will see if there is a possibility of a transfer.”
Impossible deal
Parting with £13million for the services of the Colombian was not likely to be Everton’s problem, but Financial Fair Play rules meant they were not able to spend without first selling, and that was not possible all summer.
Moise Kean could only return to Juventus initially on a loan deal, while their highest-paid player James Rodriguez has remained at Goodison Park.
Manager Rafa Benitez could only make two free outfield signings, with the £1.7million outlay on Demarai Gray the only money spent in the summer.
Genk wanted money for Munoz, but Everton were not able to get a deal for last season’s Belgian Cup winner done, and now have to make do with Seamus Coleman until at least January.
Carlo Ancelotti deployed Ben Godfrey and even Mason Holgate at right-back for some games last term, and Benitez could be forced to call on the centre-backs if need be.
