Darren Bent shares England concern over Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Darren Bent has shared his concern that Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin may never become the main striker for England.

Speaking to an Everton fan on talkSPORT [04/09/21], the ex-Sunderland forward, who scored over 100 Premier League goals in his career, questioned whether the 24-year-old’s path will always be blocked for the Three Lions.

Bent asked: “Is there a case potentially that we will never see Calvert-Lewin get a regular run in the England team? Because you’ve got Harry Kane in front now, you’ve got Mason Greenwood coming up behind him, will he ever become England’s main number nine?”

The Everton fan replied: “He’s going to be one of the top scorers in the Premier League this year and I’ll put my money where my mouth is and say he’s going to score more than Harry Kane, only because Kane is somewhere else.”

Bent then said to host Andy Goldstein: “Calvert Lewis has got off to an unbelievable start and he seems to be getting better and better. That’s why I asked him as an Everton fan, because he is playing really, really well.

“But he’s got Mason Greenwood behind him, Harry Kane isn’t going anywhere for now, Danny Ings, Ollie Watkins…”

Tough competition

Calvert-Lewin has certainly got a fight on his hands for that number nine role with the plethora of talent available to Gareth Southgate.

As mentioned by Bent, Kane is ahead of the Everton forward while Greenwood, Ings, Watkins and Patrick Bamford are all sniffing around for opportunities.

Had Calvert-Lewin been playing ten years ago, he would have almost certainly been a fixture in the starting XI.

But competition is fierce now and Calvert-Lewin must prove that he can take his game to new heights.

16 Premier League goals last season was impressive in a Blues side that struggled to create many clear-cut opportunities, but he must prove that he can make advances on that figure and establish himself as a 20-goal-a-season centre-forward, as well as increasing his creation chances for others.

That can only be good for Everton as he looks to establish himself in the England set-up.
