Fulham made late approach to sign Everton right-back Jonjoe Kenny

Fulham made a late approach to sign Everton right-back Jonjoe Kenny, according to the Liverpool Echo.

It is claimed that the Championship table-toppers, now managed by ex-Blues boss Marco Silva, enquired about the Liverpool-born defender late into the summer transfer window.

However, despite being available for sale and loan for the past three seasons, Kenny was not allowed to leave Everton as the club struggled to sign a new right-back to compete with Seamus Coleman.

Kenny, 24, has been at Everton since 2006, rising through the ranks before making his Premier League debut as a 19-year-old in 2016.

He has made a further 34 top-flight appearances for the Blues but just four of these have come in the last two seasons.

The full-back spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Celtic and his contract with the Toffees expires next year.

Brief Blues resurrection?

Everton’s inability to sign a right-back may just see Kenny earn some unexpected game time under Rafa Benitez this season.

Kenny made eight appearances during the first half of last season under Carlo Ancelotti, half of those coming in the Premier League.

However, the Italian generally opted to utilise centre-backs Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate at full-back when Coleman was not available or being rested.

It’s not clear how Benitez views the pecking order currently; Kenny was handed a start against Huddersfield Town in the League Cup on August 24, playing as a wing-back with Holgate in the back three.

But Godfrey has been unavailable for the Blues so far this season, while Coleman is yet to succumb to injury.

Kenny may well be given opportunities in the cup competitions, but will he be trusted ahead of Godfrey or Holgate if Coleman is ruled out for a Premier League fixture?

It’s difficult to see that being the case, but with Everton failing to sign a defender all summer his prospects certainly look a lot brighter than they did at the start of the transfer window.
