Everton striker Cenk Tosun is set to return to Besiktas in January on a free after a summer move failed, according to Fotospor.
The Turkey international, 30, has a deal that runs until June 2022 at Goodison Park, but the Turkish news outlet claims there was a chance for a free transfer over the summer.
However, Tosun, who joined the Blues in January 2018, decided against moving as he wanted to continue his rehabilitation at Everton ahead of potentially returning to full fitness in November.
Additionally, the Toffees striker currently earns £3million at the club every year, but Besiktas were offering £1.3million plus bonuses, and he did not see the sense in giving up the extra wages ahead of a possible move in January.
Exit on the cards?
Tosun has been injured since last season while on loan at Besiktas and he underwent knee surgery in April.
He has not had a chance to prove himself to Rafa Benitez but is likely to have an opportunity to do so before the end of the year as he works his way back to full fitness.
The Toffees have Dominic Calvert-Lewin and deadline day signing Salomon Rondon as their striking options after the loan exit of Moise Kean, and the Turkish forward already faces a tough task as far as getting himself back into the team goes.
Besiktas will likely be more than glad to have him back in January if he becomes surplus to requirements on Merseyside.
Everton are not likely to get a tangible fee for his services by then as suitors will be keen to wait till summer when he is going to become a free agent.
The forgotten striker will be aiming to get back on the pitch for now before thinking about his future, and that is the most important for him to do in the coming months.
