TalkSPORT host and Gabby Agbonlahor baffled as Everton fan makes title claim
Gabby Agbonlahor cannot believe an Everton fan has claimed that the club can win the Premier League title under Rafa Benitez this season.
The Spaniard joined the Goodison Park outfit in the summer as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement, and he has led them to three victories in their opening five league games of 2021-22.
Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa was their first of the campaign, but Harvey, an Everton fan, has high hopes for the season, and his title claim on talkSPORT surprised those in the studio when he called in.
As shared on their official Twitter account on Sunday afternoon, the Toffees faithful said: “Personally, I think we deserved to win the game, Everton were the much better side. I think Everton could win the league under Rafa Benitez.”
The host replied: “Woah! That’s some kind of statement. Have Everton got enough strength and depth to go on and win the title this season, though?”
Harvey continued: “The way I see it, there are 11 players on the pitch at a time, and if we can just keep going the way we’ve started the season, just get as many points as we can, I think we should be up there fighting for the top spots and certainly get into Europe next season.”
The listening Agbonlahor was having none of it, though, asking the Toffees supporter: “So you really think that Everton team, even at full strength, could go a whole season and beat the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United to the league?”
He responded: “If the fans can get behind Rafa Benitez, I think a 100%, we can go on, go all the way.”
Unbelievable
Everton were in fourth position in the table heading into the fifth matchday of the campaign, and not many fans would fancy their chances of finishing in the Champions League spots despite their impressive start to the campaign.
To see a fan claim he believes Benitez can guide the side to the title is unbelievable, and it is definitely not a realistic target.
The league should be won by one of Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea or Man Utd, and not many will see the Blues as one of the dark horses.
They spent just £1.7million in the summer, and there is no way they can pip the favourites to the title.
There is not enough quality depth in the squad, and their struggle at Villa Park with Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Seamus Coleman and Jordan Pickford missing highlighted that.
The best Benitez’s side can aim for is a top-six finish, and they would need a lot of consistency and fewer injuries to even get into Europe.
