Gabby Agbonlahor is ‘not having’ Benitez as Everton manager

Everton crashed out of the League Cup at the hands of QPR on Tuesday night, and Gabriel Agbonlahor has aimed a dig at Rafa Benitez.

The former Liverpool boss joined the Toffees in the summer as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement, and a lot of the fans were not pleased with the decision.

Everton have had an impressive start to the season until last weekend’s 3-0 loss to Aston Villa and their elimination from the League Cup by QPR, and Agbonlahor has used the chance to question the motive behind the Spaniard’s move to Goodison Park.

Everton

The Villa hero said on talkSPORT (as shared on their official Twitter account on Wednesday): “I can’t have Benitez. Honestly, I’m based on loyalty at Aston Villa. You look at Benitez, his family, he lives in the area. He’s just chosen to go to Everton because it’s local.

“That’s like me finishing my career and saying “alright Birmingham City, can you give me like 5/10 pound a week and I’ll sign for you because it’s next to payday and you’re local. I can’t have him!”

Move on

Agbonlahor opting not to join Birmingham and Benitez joining Everton after his Liverpool stint are two different things.

The Spaniard indeed remains a Reds hero after winning a Champions League with them, but he did not play for the club and has since managed other clubs before returning to Merseyside.

He does not owe the Anfield side loyalty and is just a professional football manager going about his job.

He has done well so far, and there is no need to question his decision.

Everton

The fans would not care as long as he keeps delivering, and missing out on a chance to go far in the League Cup would have hurt him.

The Blues have not won silverware since 1995, and should Benitez bring success to Goodison Park before leaving, he would have successfully written his name into Everton folklore.
