Tim Cahill poses in Qatar with James Rodriguez after Everton exit

Everton hero Tim Cahill has shared a photo of him with James Rodriguez in Qatar after the 30-year-old’s Goodison Park exit.

The Colombian’s departure to Al Rayyan was confirmed by the clubs on Wednesday, but his formal unveiling has been taking place today [Thursday].

However, despite leaving the Blues this week, it hasn’t taken long for Rodriguez to bump into an ex-Everton player.

Sharing a photo of them holding a shirt together at Al Rayyan’s stadium, Cahill wrote via his personal Instagram profile: “Welcome to Qatar. Let’s get you to another World Cup.”

The Australian is chief sports officer for Aspire Academy in Qatar, which likely explains his involvement.

Risky manoeuvre

Cahill was adored by the Goodison faithful during his playing days, but this is a move that is unlikely to wash well with Everton supporters.

Not everyone was happy to see Rodriguez leave after just 26 appearances, but there was a vocal majority that were unhappy with what they viewed as a lack of professionalism from the Colombian.

Seeing one of their 21st-century stars welcoming him to Qatar and pledging to help him get to next year’s World Cup, is unlikely to curry favour.

Cahill obviously has brand endorsements that he has to fulfil, but taking it directly to his Instagram so soon after Rodriguez left Everton is unlikely to win him any popularity contests.

Blues made their feelings known in the comments, with one telling Cahill to “leg it” after the Thursday evening upload.
