Goodison Tactics: How Everton beat Norwich

Everton are in the top five of the Premier League thanks to a rather comfortable 2-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday.

The Toffees won thanks to an Andros Townsend penalty and a strike from Abdoulaye Doucoure and kept their second clean sheet in the Premier League [Sky Sports’ YouTube].

The Canaries offered very little but did have chances through Ben Gibson and Mathias Normann, and Rafael Benitez will probably want to ensure those clear-cut chances don’t happen as better teams would have punished them.

However, the Toffees exploited Norwich’s weaknesses on two occasions and, in the end, won comfortably.

Alex Iwobi drifts inside and finds Demarai Gray, who has nipped in front of his man. Allan has also gained a yard on his man.
Gray slips the ball through for Allan who advances into the box.
Kabak then kicks Allan and after a VAR check a penalty is awarded, which Townsend slots into the net.

So, this was a very simple goal, and it took just two passes to force a defensive mistake from Norwich.

The second goal came when the Canaries were chasing the game and was a perfect trap from the Toffees.

The ball is played into a tight area and three Everton players swarm to the ball.
The Toffees win it back through Allan and Gray and three Everton players charge forward. Norwich have very few players back.
Gray comes away with the ball and he has three options.
He finds Doucoure who slides the ball into the bottom corner to finish the game off.

This was a perfect counter-attack from the Toffees who trapped Norwich high up the field and ruthlessly punished them.

This was a very comfortable victory in the end for the Toffees, and two clever moves ended up being enough to beat Norwich, who look very poor.

However, you would think it will be a much tougher test next week against the Red Devils, and we are intrigued to see what Rafael Benitez comes up with.
