Jack Cunningham Everton Fan Mailbag: Is Marcel Brands doing enough?
Every week we’ll be asking Everton fans on our Twitter account for questions that will be answered by Goodison News correspondent Jack Cunningham. You can join in by following the Goodison News Twitter account and watching out for weekly mailbag posts.
Everton were the lowest spending Premier League club in the last transfer window as Rafael Benitez was made to pay for some of the club’s past mistakes.
Instead of spending large amounts of cash, the Spaniard had to be very clever and managed to pick up four first-team players for very little outlay [Football Transfers].
However, would he have had to do that had Marcel Brands not made so many mistakes?

Well, we asked for your burning questions about the Blues this week for Goodison News correspondent Jack Cunningham to answer, and one fan wanted to know if Brands is being punished for his transfer failures?

This is a brilliant question from Reg, and he has every right to be unhappy with the Dutchman since he arrived at Goodison Park.
The club appointed Brands in 2018, and since then, he has helped the club bring in a lot of players, and not many of them have been successful.
The likes of Bernard, Alex Iwobi, Fabian Delph, Mosie Kean, Jean-Philippe Gbamin and James Rodriguez have all either failed or are failing to deliver for the Toffees for various reasons.
Delph is on a six-figure sum per week, so you can see why Reg is particularly annoyed about this deal [Liverpool Echo].
Gbamin has had the time from hell and has made just four first-team appearances, while the likes of Kean just failed to deliver for the club.
These deals cost a lot of money in terms of transfer fees, and the club has been paying for that ever since.
However, it is not all bad, and in Brands’ first transfer window, the club signed Lucas Digne, Yerry Mina, and Richarlison, who have all proved to be valuable players for the Toffees.
However, do these three players justify the other bad signings? I would argue they don’t, and Brands needs to have a good transfer window in both January and next summer to restore the excellent reputation he once had [Sky Sports].
In answer to your question, though, Reg, I don’t believe that the club will have punished Brands, and Benitez has had to suffer for his actions instead.
You would imagine that the Dutchman could be running out of time to impress, though, because some of these signings haven’t been good enough.
In other Everton news, Michael Ball wants to see the club sign some players in January.
