Kevin Campbell: Demarai Gray & Andros Townsend prove everyone wrong at Everton

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has insisted that Everton duo Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have proved everyone wrong.

The Toffees brought Townsend in on a free deal, whereas Gray only cost £1.7million from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer.

Campbell believes that because they didn’t cost up to £40million, fans and the media questioned why Rafa Benitez made those moves.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said, “Big time.

“There was a lot of fans and people in the media that were looking at Everton bringing him in, but Townsend is a fine player.

“He’s been in the England squad, he’s been a consistent performer in the Premier League for years. Everton lack consistency, so you think it’s a perfect fit.

“Because he didn’t cost £40million, fans are thinking why have they done that? But, for two players, him and Demarai Gray, combined cost of £1.7million – they’re making a real difference.”

Bargains.

Who cares if Townsend and Gray didn’t cost too much? You cannot judge players just on how much they cost in the modern era.

Certain things can increase value, such as English players moving to another Premier League club usually adds millions.

Not many signings have had more impacts than Gray and Townsend this season, with the wingers having involvements in nearly every single game already.

The two signings have allowed Benitez to play his preferred system, and they have proved to be perfect for just that.

James Rodriguez cost big money and look at how that ended, with his exit now opening the door to more mega-money moves – Marcel Brands has to be smart.

Hopefully, these two signings prove that he doesn’t need to just throw cash at big names to be successful.
