Martin Keown: Everton defender Ben Godfrey involved in ‘nasty’ incident with Luke Shaw
Everton defender Ben Godfrey was involved in an incident with Manchester United star Luke Shaw in the second half at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Godfrey, 23, was challenging for the ball deep inside the home side’s half, and his eagerness to regain the ball saw him come into contact with Shaw, whose head injury saw the game momentarily paused.
Speaking during BT Sport‘s live coverage of the Premier League clash that ended 1-1, with goals from Anthony Martial and Andros Townsend, ex-Everton defender Keown winced after the incident.

“It’s a little bit nasty actually,” he said.
“It’s a flailing foot that just catches him. [It was] Accidental of course. [But] He does brush the top of his head.”

In the thick of it
Godfrey missed the first four games of the 2021/22 campaign as he battled with COVID-19 illness, but he has returned to start Everton’s last five games, completing 90 minutes in each of the last three, including today.
He was required to deputise for Seamus Coleman at right-back once again with the Blues captain still sidelined.
Despite not playing in his natural position Godfrey still showcased the talents that enticed the Toffees to sign him from Norwich City last year.
His aggressive nature allows Everton to drive up the field while his pace is a welcome addition to a Blues backline severely lacking in it, especially with Michael Keane and Yerry Mina in the side.
Overall, it was another impressive Godfrey performance as Everton proved more than a match for Manchester United at Old Trafford.
