Tony Cascarino: Abdoulaye Doucoure is the best PL midfielder currently
Abdoulaye Doucoure assisted Andros Townsend’s equaliser on Saturday as Everton held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
The Frenchman, 28, has now been involved in six Premier League goals in 2021-22, and Tony Cascarino believes he is the best central midfielder in the English top-flight right now.
The former Watford star has already surpassed his tally of two goals and three assists from last term, and he will be looking to help the Toffees to a top-six finish this season.
Doucoure shone at the Theatre of Dreams, and Cascarino believes the Red Devils could do with such a midfielder.
He said on talkSPORT (as shown on their official Twitter account): “I can’t think of a better midfielder in the Premier League with the way he’s playing in the advanced role.
“He’s playing brilliantly. He’s really playing well, and you’re looking at Man Utd midfield thinking “that’s what they’re screaming out for”. A Doucoure type of midfielder. Anyway, his ball to Townsend, I thought it was a great finish.”
Top player
Doucoure is becoming one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the land right now, and he could force his way into the star-studded France national team if he keeps improving at this rate.
Having featured for the French youth teams, the Everton ace is eyeing a place in Didier Deschamps’ team, and he needs to keep impressing to have a chance ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
He scored seven goals and assisted three others in 37 PL games for Watford in 2017-18, but that was not enough to earn him a call-up.
Should he end up getting involved in at least 15 league goals this term, ignoring him for a call-up could be hard.
The midfielder is more than his attacking prowess, with his defensive abilities top-notch.
Everton have a top player on their hands, but he could soon start attracting the bigwigs at this rate, and he definitely has what it takes to play for any team on the continent.
