Goodison Tactics: What Everton did well and badly in 1-1 draw v Manchester United

Thanks to a wonderful counter-attack, Everton left Old Trafford with a point after coming from a goal down to seal a draw.

The Toffees broke away through Demarai Gray, who had no right to get the ball, and the move was finished by Andros Townsend, who slammed in his fifth goal of the season.

In truth, the Toffees probably could have left Manchester with all three points but in the end, had to settle for a point that kept them in the European spots heading into the international break.

There were a lot of positives for Rafael Benitez to take from the game, and the goal was arguably one of the best counter-attacks in the league this season.

This was a fine goal, the perfect counter-attack.

The determination from both Gray and Doucoure to set up that chance was something else, and it was a composed finish from Townsend.

However, despite this great goal and the overall solid display from Everton, there were a couple of things that Rafa might need to worry about.

The Red Devils’ goal was brilliant, but a couple of chances before that were too easy.

Now, this was very early in the game but could have so easily led to a goal.

Townsend just doesn’t get off the ground, while Godfrey is not marking Martial at all.

Out on the left, Digne dives in and makes it too easy for Wan-Bissaka.

So there were a few mistakes here, and there were a few more in the next clip as well.

Once again, you would have to say that the Toffees were lucky here, and Cavani really should have scored.

So, as you can see, there were plenty of positives for Benitez to take out of the match but also a few worrying signs that need to be worked on.

However, there is no doubt that the Spaniard is doing a brilliant job so far.
