Marcel Brands comments on Everton January plans for Donny van de Beek

Marcel Brands has confirmed that Everton made an attempt to sign Donny van de Beek during the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old midfielder had a torrid time following his £35.5million move from Ajax in 2020, managing 19 appearances in the Premier League. However, most of them having come from the bench.

Everton made an attempt to sign him during the summer transfer window on loan, but United pulled the plug at the last minute.

The Dutch midfielder has struggled to get minutes this season. He has dropped further down the pecking order at the club following the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

Brands has described him as a “very good player”, and has suggested that it’s a pity that he finds himself in such a situation.

When asked whether Everton could make a move for him in January, Brands told Dutch broadcaster NOS (via the Daily Mail): “You always depend on whether a club wants to cooperate.

“And it is early October, so much can still happen with injuries. United are playing on various fronts, it’s hard to say now.”

Good signing

Van de Beek is a fantastic player who made his name at Ajax. It’s a shame that he is struggling to get games at Old Trafford and Everton must try to sign him in January.

The Toffees operated on a tight budget during the summer, but players like Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have proved to be bargain signings.

With James Rodriguez out of the picture, Everton can afford to sign a creative attacking midfielder to add more depth to their squad.

Everton are fifth in the league table, two points behind leaders Chelsea, and they have an outside chance of finishing in the top four this season.

Van de Beek will be a superb addition for the Toffees and the club should make a concrete effort to sign him in January.
