Danny Mills: Why would Dominic Calvert-Lewin leave Everton for Arsenal?

Danny Mills has cast doubts over suggestions that Dominic Calvert-Lewin would leave Everton for Arsenal in the near future.

The Sky Sports pundit, appearing on talkSPORT [05/10/21], in a video relayed on the talkSPORT Twitter account, was asked by host Hugh Woozencroft whether he would swap the Blues for the Gunners after an online debate raged on Monday.

“I wouldn’t, not right now,” Mills said. “When you look at what Rafa Benitez has done, the two players he’s brought in that have really been beneficial. You look at his pedigree versus Mikel Arteta’s pedigree… I know where I’m going and who I believe is going to get it right long term.

“Everton have got a lot of money, they’re very well backed financially, possibly moving into a new stadium sooner rather than later.

“I think he will thrive under Rafa Benitez and get even better. [If he] Goes to arsenal, [I’m] not sure.”

Woozencroft: “But the Arsenal fans would say ‘but they’re Arsenal’, they feel they’re a bigger club, that they’ve got more chance of winning trophies.”

Mills: “But what’s a bigger club? Have they really got more chance of winning trophies? I would say Everton and Arsenal are probably on par for winning a trophy, I don’t think there’s an awful lot between it.”

Sideways step

If Calvert-Lewin does leave Everton in the near future, there’s surely no chance he ends up in north London, for either Arsenal or Tottenham.

Both clubs are likely to be in the market for a centre-forward soon with Harry Kane and Alexandre Lacazette both likely to leave their respective clubs, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the wrong side of 30.

However, Arsenal and Spurs are on a similar level to Everton, while the Blues have a much more positive feeling around the club at the moment, as opposed to the depressing mood around the other two.

Calvert-Lewin has proven himself as one of the most fearsome strikers in the Premier League, and that’s likely to see him attract admiring glances from a host of elite-level sides.

He could do much better than Arsenal or Spurs, but it’s not likely that he will depart Everton any time soon, particularly if Richarlison leaves next summer, as has been suggested in many quarters.
