Newcastle United could target Mason Holgate in spending spree
Everton ace Mason Holgate could be targeted by Newcastle United following their takeover by Saudi Arabia, according to Luke Edwards.
The Magpies now have the richest owners in the world and could spend as much as £190million in January without breaking Financial Fair Play rules.
They will be targeting some Premier League stars when the winter transfer window opens and also make moves next summer, and The Telegraph journalist suggests Holgate, 24, could be an option.
Edwards said about the Toffees star: “A versatile defender, relatively cheap at £15m, he would be a solid addition to the squad and could do with relaunching his career after falling away from England consideration.”
Panic?
The journalist has only made a suggestion, and nothing will happen until Newcastle’s (next) manager identifies his transfer targets, but could Holgate emerge as a potential option?
The Magpies are about to undergo some huge changes, and they could become a very attractive option for some top players.
Holgate is in his sixth season at Everton, with almost 100 Premier League appearances to his name, and is very affordable should the Saudi-bankrolled club look to swoop.
He has only featured twice in the league this term, with Michael Keane and Yerry Mina ahead of him in Rafa Benitez’s pecking order.
That is not doing his chances of breaking into the England team any good, and if he gets assurances of regular playing minutes elsewhere, he could be tempted to leave Goodison Park.
Losing Holgate would not particularly be a huge blow, but Everton are one of the clubs that should be worried once Newcastle start their spending spree.
They have quality homegrown players who could be open to joining the soon-to-be bigwigs.
