Steven Gerrard blames Benitez for Robbie Keane Liverpool failure

Steven Gerrard has once again tried to ignite the tribalism between Everton and Liverpool by taking a jibe at Rafa Benitez.

In his autobiography My Story with Donald McRae, the current Rangers manager said that Benitez interfered too much with Robbie Keane’s game.

He said, via Pundit Arena, “I could see why Rafa had his doubts about playing Robbie in front of me. He had none of Torres’s pace.

“Robbie was far better when allowed to drop in behind and pick up intelligent spaces where he could set up and score goals. But it was obvious that his relationship with Rafa would never work.

“Rafa made it personal. I couldn’t understand why Rafa tried to change a top player. Let him play his own game – that’s why we signed him.”

The Ireland international was signed during the latter stages of his career and probably wasn’t fit enough to be a success at Liverpool.

Instead of taking the rational point of view, he’s decided to have a dig at Benitez which is pretty surprising, to say the least.

Rafa was the manager when Gerrard won the only relevant trophy in his career and that would not have happened had they not had a tactician like him at the helm.

Had the Spaniard not been in charge of Everton, the former Liverpool captain would probably not have gone down that road.

But, he wants to score some more browny points with the Reds fans and also with the Liverpool hierarchy as he plans to take over the Anfield hot seat in the near future, possibly after Jurgen Klopp goes.

We wish that happens soon as it would be sweet to see Benitez beat Gerrard despite having a weaker team.

Hopefully, the victory takes place at Anfield and the sort of ‘ovation’ the Kop gives Benitez will be absolutely memorable.
