Everton man Andros Townsend’s dad discusses his son’s move

Troy Townsend has admitted that he gave Andros a “nudge” when Rafael Benitez was appointed as Everton manager in the summer.

The Spaniard arrived at Goodison Park on June 30, and less than a month later, Townsend was announced as a new Toffees player, and it seems as if Troy played a role in helping the club sign his son.

The 30-year-old played under Benitez at Newcastle United and thrived under his guidance, and it seems as if Troy knew this and helped his son move to Goodison Park.

Speaking to The Unholy Trinity Everton Podcast, he said: “There were conversations with other clubs, but the minute Rafa was announced as Everton manager, I must admit, I began to sit up a little bit and nudge him.”

A great decision from Troy and Andros.

When the Toffees completed the move, we can’t imagine that many people were too excited.

After all, he had only scored one league goal in the past two seasons for Crystal Palace, so you can understand why some people might not have been convinced.

However, Townsend has been a revelation and has smashed in five goals in just nine appearances in all competitions.

Suddenly, he is everywhere and is popping up with goals and assists under a manager with whom he has a good relationship.

Everton

The winger has settled into life at Goodison very quickly and looks capable of scoring a lot more goals with his newfound confidence and belief.

It has to be said that Benitez deserves immense credit for taking a risk and signing Townsend and fair play to his dad for helping him make that move to Merseyside.

It is early days, but it looks like the winger is set for a very good season under the Spaniard.
