Everton target Matheus Nunes set to sign new Sporting deal

Everton are likely to face a massive blow in their potential attempt to sign Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon, with reports from Record claiming he is set to sign a new deal at the club.

The Toffees were heavily interested in signing the 23-year-old midfielder during the summer.

A report back in August claimed that Everton were the primary candidates to sign the midfielder, with the Toffees reportedly were preparing a £17m move for him.

The Portuguese giants were keen to cash in on him at that time, but Everton couldn’t strike a deal in the end.

Now, the midfielder is set to sign a new long term deal shortly at the Portuguese club.

It has been claimed that he will sign a new contract till 2025 and will have a £50million (60million Euros) release clause on his contract.

No chance

Everton were operating on a tight budget during the summer transfer window, and they couldn’t manage to pull off a deal for Nunes.

While players like Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend have made a huge impact this term, adding a talented player like Nunes would have further bolstered the squad.

It seems they have missed the chance now. Signing a creative midfielder must be a priority for Rafael Benitez, either in January or next summer, but it is unlikely that the Toffees will be willing to dish out in the north of £50m for Nunes.

Meanwhile, Everton have made a strong start to their Premier League campaign and find themselves fifth in the Premier League table, only two points behind league leaders Chelsea.

The Toffees will face West Ham on Sunday after the international break.
