Carlton Palmer: Dominic Calvert-Lewin unlikely to join Arsenal
Arsenal technical director Edu is keeping tabs on Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin ahead of next summer transfer window, according to Football.London.
The Gunners could be forced to replace three of their striking options, and the England international, 24, is seen as someone capable of firing the North Londoners to the next level after recent heroics.
However, Carlton Palmer does not see Calvert-Lewin leaving Goodison Park anytime soon, suggesting it would take around £70million for Arsenal to have any chance of tempting the Toffees into considering parting with him.
The former Leeds United man told This Is Futbol: “No chance, no chance whatsoever. I mean, when you say no chance, I don’t believe it will happen, but everybody’s got their price.
“But I don’t believe Arsenal, after the money that they splashed out, can go and pay 60 or £70m for another player – and Everton will ask for big money for him.
“I just really can’t see it happening. And also, the players are doing well and they’re enjoying it under Rafa Benitez, so when you’re enjoying your football and the club’s doing well, then why would you want to move?”
Tricky
Arsenal are far from the powerhouse they used to be under Arsene Wenger, but they are a sleeping giant that could be awakened anytime soon, and they remain an attractive side to some players.
They did brilliant business last summer, and while things have not worked out yet, luring Calvert-Lewin away from Merseyside should not be completely ruled out.
It will likely to take at least £70million, and should they meet Everton’s asking price, and the player expresses a readiness to move on, nothing is off the cards.
With Rafa Benitez looking to turn the Blues into European regulars, it cannot be denied that there is an exciting project ongoing at Goodison Park.
However, Arsenal are a bigger team on paper and are still a side to reckon with having missed out on European football just once in 25 years.
DCL should ideally opt to remain with Everton, or at least choose one of the bigwigs if he wants to leave Merseyside as a move to North London will be seen as a sideways one.
Nevertheless, no one can predict the future when it comes to players’ decisions, and anything can happen as this rumour continues to build magnitude.
