Rafa Benitez must axe Alex Iwobi for Watford clash

Alex Iwobi started the Everton game against West Ham on Sunday and it’s fair to say that he did not have a good outing at Goodison Park.

Rafa Benitez opted to axe Anthony Gordon despite the youngster impressing against Manchester United.

The left-winger put the Red Devils on the back foot with his trickery and combined well with Lucas Digne.

However, Iwobi, who came in for Gordon, did nothing of that sort against West Ham.

He struggled to grab the game by the scruff of its neck and failed to impose himself in the final third.

His passing was erratic, he failed to do too much off the ball and when the Toffees were handed their best chance to score a goal, he fluffed his lines.

This is not something Benitez would have expected from Iwobi when he decided to start him over Gordon.

The Spaniard thought that the 25-year-old was experienced and had the know-how of playing in the Premier League, but it clearly did not look that way on Sunday.

For the Watford game, it may be the best thing to axe Iwobi from his eleven and get in Gordon in case Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin don’t make it in time.

It looks like Iwbi’s days on Merseyside are numbered if he continues putting in these kinds of performances whenever he’s handed starts by Benitez.

At 25, he has a relatively higher resale value and it could make sense for Marcel Brands to cash in on him in January.
