Martin Keown slams Michael Keane after Everton 5-2 loss v Watford
Everton were torn apart by Watford at Goodison Park on Saturday, losing 5-2 despite leading twice in the opening 77 minutes of the game.
Tom Davies put the Toffees ahead three minutes into the game, but hat-trick hero Josh King equalised for the visitors 10 minutes later.
Richarlison came off the bench to restore his side’s lead, but Watford grabbed four goals with 12 minutes left on the clock to stun Everton.
The Blues defence was all over the place, and former Arsenal star Martin Keown was far from pleased after seeing Michael Keane keep the visitors onside for their third and fourth goals.
The pundit said on BBC Match of the Day: “Keane is so deep, it’s ridiculous, he’s keeping everybody on side.”
The defender was at it again for King’s third goal, and Keown commented: “Keane has got to get up. He’s slipping again. He doesn’t come up, keep everybody offside.”
Atrocious defending
Everton fell apart with just some minutes left to play, and Rafa Benitez would not have believed his eyes after what happened.
Keane is not to blame for the loss as Ben Godfrey also struggled to cover himself in glory, but the centre-back clearly should have done better given his level of experience.
He was sloppy at times, and that proved costly as the absence of Yerry Mina was hugely felt by the Toffees defence.
Keeping the opposition onside twice is alarming, and he is not going to get close to a return to the England national team if he continues like this.
He was very poor against Watford, making King look like prime Alan Shearer, and he cannot keep making these mistakes if Everton want to play in Europe next season.
Back-to-back defeats have dealt a huge blow on their ambitions after a fine start to the season, and Keane and his teammates need to take a long hard look at themselves.
