Kevin Campbell defends Everton fans for booing Benitez after Gordon sub
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell has defended the Everton fans who chose to boo Rafael Benitez after he took Anthony Gordon off against Watford.
The 20-year-old was arguably the Toffees’ best player in the time that he was on the pitch and helped create the opening goal [Liverpool Echo].
He also had a chance to score himself but headed well wide, and when he was brought off, Goodison Park showed their displeasure with Benitez and Campbell backs those who booed him [Mirror].

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, he said: “I think they booed solely because Gordon had a decent game.
“The fans don’t have to like what he’s doing, and they didn’t like that decision, that’s for sure.”

Now, given that Gordon was one of the Toffees’ best players on Saturday, it was odd that Benitez decided to take him off.
His replacement Richarlison did score, but the Toffees lost a lot of their drive and momentum when Gordon left the pitch.
You can see why Benitez was booed for the decision, and he must have had his reasons because it appeared as if the young Evertonian did well.

However, these weren’t the loudest boos of the day as the Toffees then totally collapsed at the end of the game and let in a shed load of goals that provoked a strong reaction from the crowd.
Benitez has had a good start, but a performance and a result like this could see the pressure slowly build on the Spaniard, and we just have to hope that he turns it around on Monday against a decent Wolverhampton Wanderers side.
