Everton made mistake with Josh King, Salomon Rondon scapegoat – Kevin Campbell

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell insists that Everton look to have made a big mistake by allowing Josh King to leave the club in the summer.

The Norwegian international came back to haunt the Toffees last week, scoring a hat-trick in that 5-2 defeat against Watford.

Rafa Benitez has since arrived, bringing in Salomon Rondon as his new attacking rotation option – someone Campbell believes has become the new scapegoat.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said, “Well, it looks like a mistake, doesn’t it?

“But, there’s obviously, the way Everton are with Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, they are strong with those players but when you don’t have them, Rafa Benitez knows Rondon.

“It’s possibly a false narrative for Rondon, where there’s a lot more expect of him, but the fact of the matter is – they’ve missed Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin with their movement and speed, they bring something special.

“Rondon has been made the scapegoat and that’s a bit unfair.”

Not going well.

Rondon and his move to Goodison Park simply isn’t working right now, and it is harming the Toffees severely.

Missing two players such as Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the amount of time that we have would hurt any club in the Premier League.

Rondon has come in, and hasn’t hit the back of the net once and that is nowhere near good enough – but is his fitness holding him back?

If that was the case, this move was never going to work until November anyway and that is another example of poor work from Marcel Brands.

We need smarter work, and would King have been better keeping around? At this stage, that looks to be the case.
