Danny Murphy: Aaron Ramsdale is going to push Pickford
The starting berth of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the England national team is under threat following some impeccable performances from Aaron Ramsdale.
The Arsenal man, 23, made a save of the season contender on Saturday as his side secured a 2-0 win over Leicester City.
Not only did Ramsdale thwart the goalscoring efforts of the Foxes, he also made some brilliant passes to his teammates, and many are already urging Gareth Southgate to make him Three Lions’ number one.
Danny Murphy believes the Gunners star is probably better than Pickford in terms of distribution, and talkSPORT host Jim White agrees.
The ex-Liverpool midfielder said (as shared on the station’s official Twitter account): “Let’s give credit to where credit is due, he’s walked into Arsenal, taken the shirt straight away and played with authority.
“He’s made tremendous saves. His distribution is up there with Pickford’s. If not better.”
White agreed, saying: “Yes.”
Murphy continued: “His passing is just tremendous. It’s great to see someone who’s going to push Pickford properly now.”
Frightening
Pickford has to be worried if he is not already, and only some mind-blowing performances for Everton can help him retain his England spot ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
The Toffees defence has not exactly helped him out this term, and that has seen him keep just two clean sheets in eight games, leaking 11 goals.
On the other hand, Ramsdale has four clean sheets in seven games for Arsenal, and he has been consistent since becoming first-choice at the Emirates Stadium some weeks ago.
He is looking better than his Everton counterpart with the ball on his feet, and it would not be surprising if Southgate hands him a chance to impress during the next international break.
Pickford has someone breathing down his neck, and that is good news for Rafa Benitez as it will only keep him on his toes and make him better for club and country.
In other Everton news, Toffees centre-forward has been pictured in training ahead of Wolves trip amid recent injury woe.
