Chris Sutton blasts Mason Holgate challenge for challenge on Trincao
Everton suffered their third consecutive Premier League loss on Monday night after Wolverhampton Wanderers handed them a 2-1 defeat.
The Toffees were very poor in the first half at the Molineux Stadium, deservedly going into the break 2-0 down.
Things improved when action restarted, with Alex Iwobi pulling one back, but it was too little, too late as the hosts held on to their lead to pick up all three points.
Wolves had some chances to find the back of the net and put the game to bed, and they came close to getting a penalty after Mason Holgate hacked down Trincao very close to the box.
Martin Atkinson immediately pointed to the spot but the refereed reversed his decision after VAR intervened.
Chris Sutton was far from impressed by the tackle of the Everton defender, slamming him for it.
The former Chelsea said (as shared on the BBC website): “It’s such a daft, reckless challenge.
“It’s outside and then goes into the box. That is inches.”
Lucky
Wolves should have scored more than two, and it is safe to say that the Toffees were lucky to lose by just a goal.
Holgate was far from impressive, and he would have breathed a sigh of relief after that decision.
While Ben Godfrey had a nightmare in the first half, with his back pass allowing Raul Jimenez going through on goal before doubling his side’s lead, Holgate should have done better.
He was unaware of the position of the Wolves striker and could have prevented him from scoring if he was on alert.
Everton failed to get the basics right in the opening 45 minutes, and it proved to be costly in the end despite their best efforts in the second half.
Benitez would have been disappointed after his side failed to produce the needed response following the 5-2 loss to Watford last time out.
The Spaniard is under a lot of pressure right now after his side’s poor run, and anything apart from victory when they host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday could spell trouble.
