Goodison Tactics: This is why Everton lost v Wolves

Everton lost their third Premier League game in a row on Monday night against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Toffees found themselves 2-0 down at the break and were completely outplayed, with Jordan Pickford having to make several saves to ensure that it wasn’t a total embarrassment.

Both goals were very simple and avoidable, and you can imagine they would have angered Rafael Benitez greatly.

The Toffees did get one back through Alex Iwobi, but it wasn’t enough and Wolves held on for a big three points.

Here we are going to analyse both goals and also other moments from what was a horrible game from Everton’s point of view [Sky Sports YouTube].

The ball is threaded through the Everton midfield so easily. Allan is nowhere near Raul Jimenez.
Jimenez picks up the ball and wanders forward. He is too quick for Allan and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, while the two centre-backs retreat.
Jimenez carries the ball so far without one player tackling him. He then flicks the ball through for Hwang Hee-Chan. He scores but was in an offside position.

The Toffees got so lucky that VAR saved them here.

However, it didn’t wake them up, and the opening goal came from another set-piece, and Michael Keane has to look at himself because he was all over the shop.

As the corner comes in, you can see that Keane looks to be in a decent position. Max Kilman has made a little bit of space for himself.
Kilman wins the header and scores. You can see that Keane has jumped too late as the ball has gone past him and is on the way into the net.

For some reason, Andros Townsend was the man on Kilman, but Keane is the one in the position to deal with this corner.

Instead, he got underneath the ball and made it too easy for Kilman.

The second goal that proved to be the killer was also an awful individual error from Ben Godfrey though Mason Holgate didn’t cover himself in glory either.

Godfrey plays a weak pass back towards Pickford. However, Holgate is so slow to react and Jimenez pounces on it.
Suddenly, Jimenez is in on goal and chips the ball over Pickford to embarrass Godfrey.

So, this goal was awful from Everton’s point of view, and we can’t imagine that it is one Godfrey will want to see again.

However, it can definitely be argued that Holgate didn’t help his left-back out at all, and if he reacts quicker, that goal doesn’t happen.

So, there were a lot of individual errors from the Toffees, and it is down to Benitez to sort this out before this poor run of form gets any worse.
