Darren Gough suggests Everton could press the panic button with Rafa Benitez

Everton are struggling at the moment and talkSPORT pundit Darren Gough has suggested the Spaniard could be sacked if the results do not improve.

The Toffees went into the October international break on a high after earning a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

However, after three consecutive defeats, the pressure is mounting on Rafael Benitez.

Everton

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked Nuno Espirito Santo this week after a run of poor form, and have appointed former Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte.

Gough has suggested that if Everton lose their next league game, the Toffees board might press the panic button.

“If they lose their next one, it wouldn’t surprise me if they press the panic button! He’s gone because he is not a popular appointment within Liverpool,” said Gough on talkSPORT.

Big claim

Benitez has not been a popular choice at Merseyside, and the fans will be quick to judge him if the results do not improve from here on.

That’s what happening at the moment, although Benitez is confident that he can turn it around.

Everton

Against Wolves at Molineux, Everton went 2-0 down at the break. In the second half, it was a much-improved performance from the Toffees as they pulled one back.

The squad will get better once Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure return to training. But, right now, the Toffees need to stop this gradual downslide.

They have slipped to 10th in the league table, and have lost as many matches they have won so far. Basically, it’s a repeat of what it was under Carlo Ancelotti last season, and as such, there hasn’t been any big improvement, in terms of results.

However, will the Toffees pull the trigger so quickly? Probably not. The results haven’t gone their way, but the performances haven’t been below par. Benitez is likely to be given time, but the results need to improve.

Everton will face Tottenham in their next match and it won’t be an easy game. Spurs will be looking for a reaction under their new manager, and the Toffees need to prepare for that.
